Thunder Bay Resort is an all-season resort with deluxe lodging located in Northern Michigan featuring an award-winning Elk Viewing Horse-Drawn Carriage/Sleigh Ride with Gourmet Dinner & Wine Tasting.
Whether experienced during the fall when the colors are spectacular, in the winter tucked under a cozy wool blanket in the sleigh, or in the summer when the elk are raising their young, this event is rated a "must do" by tour operators. USA Today rates Thunder Bay Resort as one of the "Top 10 Sleigh Rides in America."
Board a carriage (sleigh in the winter) pulled by Percheron and Belgian draft horses for a 4-hour adventure. It is literally "over the river and through the woods" where you will view elk in theie natural surroundings. A guide on-board each sleigh/carriage will provide you with information about these magnificent animals.
Then it's on to the Elk Antler Log Cabin furnished with period antiques and trophies. Before your eyes on 100-year-old wood cook stoves, owner Jan Matthias will prepare and serve a superb 5-course gourmet dinner accompanied by a tasting of wines from nearby Stoney Acres Winery.
During dinner before the massive stone fireplace guests will learn about the habits of the elk, hear the mating "bugle," and handle massive shed antlers. Jan offers a humorous monolog of how this event began over 20 years ago in a one-room hunting shack with no electricity or indoor plumbing and how it has evolved.
The resort also offers a challenging golf course, big rig-friendly RV park, plus hiking and biking, and tubing on Thunder Bay River. It is a great destination for Wine Lovers Weekends, Murder Mystery Weekends, and Quilters Retreats and a very popular group tour and motorcoach destination. Only 20 miles to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Michigan's Sunrise Side. It is very affordable and within easy driving distance of Mackinaw Island and Traverse City.
