Sugarloaf Alpaca Company can be found nestled amidst the lush rolling pastures beneath Maryland’s Sugarloaf Mountain. Nearly 100 head of alpaca make up our happy herd and our farm operates on an alpaca-first basis, striving to create a healthful and low stress environment.
An intelligent, friendly animal, our alpaca will eat “treats” from your hand which are provided free of charge to our visitors.
Naturally inquisitive animals, their personalities show through as they jostle the fence to have their necks or backs scratched.
Enjoy the babies frolicking in the fields almost year round as alpacas have an 11 month gestation. Our first babies (cria) of the year typically arrive in April and our last birthing is usually in October. The cria and their mommies are kept in our nursery pasture for the first two or three months, dependent upon their strength and growth, before they are transferred into our toddler field.
While at the farm, take a look at our one-of-a-kind Alpaca Shoppe. Featuring Maryland grown yarns from our very own animals, we also have a wide selection of alpaca merchandise including, gloves, scarves, hats, sweaters, socks, jackets and gifts. Weaving demonstrations and knitting classes are also held in the Shoppe, see our website for details, as well as felting and other yarn craft activities.
